Canberra Grammar School was saddened by the passing of Mrs Wilma McKeown on 25 July 2024, at 96 years of age. Her late husband, Mr Paul McKeown, was Headmaster for 27 years from 1959 to 1985, making Wilma a daily presence for nearly a third of the School's history. For over sixty years, she was respected and loved by generations of students, staff, and alumni.A woman of warmth and strength, she raised the five McKeown children in the former Headmaster’s Residence on campus and was an additional mother to many, especially distant boarders. She also played a vital role in creating a community for countless families of students and staff. She was dedicated to the School throughout her husband’s tenure and beyond, regularly attending concerts, Vintage Club Reunions, and School events, even into her 90s. Most recently, she was the guest of honour at the Snow Concert Hall opening, where Mr Terry Snow expressed his lifelong gratitude.A passionate arts champion, Wilma ensured music was integral to the School. The original Chapel organ, the grand piano in the Dining Hall, and many artworks around the School are part of her legacy. To celebrate the School’s 50th anniversary in 1979, she led the project to embroider the Chapel kneelers, which are still in use today. The Chapel, reflecting her and her husband's deep faith, symbolises the School and the community they shaped through decades of change and growth. Her support was invaluable during the School's evolution. Wilma graciously accepted the demolition of the Breezeway building and was delighted with the new plans. She was thrilled about the decision to become fully co-educational, exclaiming, "Whacko! at last!" Her husband's early initiatives in the 1970s paved the way for much of the School's current structure.Wilma is survived by her children, Christopher, Deirdre, Libby, Jonathan, and Penelope, and her sister, Mrs Lesley Sowell. We extend our community's sympathy and give thanks in prayer for Wilma’s dedication and care.A remembrance service will be held at the Anglican Church of Ascension in Bateman’s Bay at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, 6 August 2024.

Does your child have a special talent? As parents, we know our kids are unique. But what if they show real promise and passion, especially in the performing arts? Mainstream schools may not always support their dreams. That's where specialist performing arts schools shine! They offer rigorous training alongside academic education, creating a nurturing environment for talented kids to thrive. Consider exploring these schools to help your child reach their full potential. Considering a specialist performing arts school for your talented child? Here's what you need to know: Choose Wisely: Not all performing arts schools are the same. They specialize in different areas, from classical music to drama. Consider what suits your child's interests and goals.Competition: Be prepared for intense competition. Schools seek exceptional talent and potential, with rigorous audition processes and limited spots.Financial Assistance: Specialist schools are often fee-paying, with boarding options pushing fees higher. Some offer scholarships or bursaries, and government subsidies may be available for select schools.Choir Schools: For young musical talents, consider choristerships at cathedral choir schools, offering a prep school education with scholarships.Mainstream Schools: Don't overlook mainstream schools. Many offer excellent arts programs, both independent and state-funded, despite funding challenges. When choosing the right path for your child's artistic journey, explore all options and consider what aligns best with their aspirations and needs.#akademos #smartschoolselection #parents #artschool #ukeducation #londonschools #performingartschool #talents

We've seen the pitfalls the entertainment industry has set for our children. The media often pushes an agenda that is not glorifying to God, teaching us that the ultimate goal is fame and glory - that these belong to us because we are the reason for our giftings and talents and that man should be worshiped. But God is the only One who deserves worship. That's the beauty of an education at CLA. Students learn that "Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made" (John 1:3) and that the fine and performing arts don't have to follow the standard of the world. They learn that they are made in the image of God - that they create because he created. They learn to use their giftings and talents to glorify God, because he is the reason we have them. They also learn that they have purpose in those giftings and talents, and what they create can be beautiful because God is the source of our inspiration - that He receives glory when we use these talents for Him. Our students have many opportunities to demonstrate this. Some of these opportunities include:- Chapel Band- Lower School and Upper School Musicals- Talent Shows- Dramas, Plays, Skits, and Presentations- Video Production- Creative Writing and Poetry- Art Contests- Skit creation (in multiple languages including Latin and Spanish)- K-12 Choir Concerts and Performances- Small EnsemblesAnd we're always expanding into new areas, because we have the freedom and flexibility to explore things that encourage student giftings. These opportunities are more accessible than you think! We would love to have you come and take a tour to see for yourself how a quality classical Christian education can benefit your family. To schedule a tour, simply call 423-649-0040 or you can email info@clak12.org.Enrollment for the '24-'25 school year opens soon!#classicaleducation #christianeducation #christslegacyacademy #thinkagain #youcangettherefromhere #livingthelegacy

Madsen Arts Centre is just a bit different. 1. We do not exclude adult dancers from regular classes. Levels Intermediate Foundation through Advanced 2 are open to minimum age of 11 and through to 106! If you have the ability and desire, we will teach you. 2. We cap our younger classes at 12 students and our older classes at 15. We want to give every student the attention and feedback they need and deserve. This cannot be accomplished in large classes. Someone is inevitably left behind. 3. We are focused on teaining. Our classes are not choreography or exam syllabus classes. They are set up to tearing every student and offer the modifications and challenges needed to help every student gain a deeper understanding of the technique and strength needed. Not every student dances to compete, perform or enter exams, but every student deserves the best training possible, whether they dance once a week or many hours. 4. Because of our class structure, exams and competitions are not mandatory. These are extra and outside of the regular class schedule so that it is available to those who want to pursue those options. Want to know more? Come to a free class on Wednesday, June 26! Pre-register to guarantee a spot. Classes are by age group, not ability. We can help everyone! https://lnkd.in/gjqRA2EC

Thoughtful op-ed by Jennifer C. about public sector funding for arts and culture:"....to build public buy-in around a sound, long-term public arts funding strategy, we need to answer some critical questions:-- What is a reasonable amount of public arts funding for Cuyahoga County? ...-- What are national best practices on both public arts funding mechanisms and funding formulas?"
